Biofilm - The Breeding Ground For Bacteria

It has long been established that one of the main areas responsible for bacterial infection in healthcare environments is within shower hoses and shower heads. Infrequent use, together with warm ambient temperatures of a bathroom environment, provide the perfect breeding ground for biofilm to proliferate. In the UK, hard water is also a contributing factor as this creates the build-up of limescale to which biofilm adheres to.

Biofilm formation of microorganisms causes persistent tissue and foreign body infections resistant to treatment with antimicrobial agents. Up to 80% of human bacterial infections are biofilm associated; such infections are most frequently caused by Staphylococcus epidermidis, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterobacteria such as Escherichia coli.

The accurate diagnosis of biofilm infections is often difficult, which prevents the appropriate choice of treatment. As biofilm infections significantly contribute to patient morbidity and substantial healthcare costs, novel strategies to treat these infections are urgently required.

The creation of our patented Sentinel™ Mesh Technology provides a cost-effective, environmentally friendly and efficient way of dealing with biofilm build up in tap spouts, shower heads and shower hoses, as can be seen in the video below.

Our range of Sentinel™ products have a longer lifespan and are up to 50% cheaper than existing filtration solutions, which retain bacteria that comes downstream rather than stopping the potential ingress of waterborne bacteria entering at the outlet itself.
